The intensity of oxidative processes and the activity of the antioxidant system in the leaves of woody plants growing in conditions of technogenic pollution

The results of the evaluation of the functional state of woody plants growing in the zone of influence of the enterprise for the production of building mate-
rials are presented. Gas and dust emissions of the OJSC Krasnoselskstroy-materialy cause stimulation of oxidative processes in the leaves of woody plants, which manifests itself in the increase in the content of malondialdehyde (by 19–50% in pine needles within a radius of 2 km from the source of pollution and by 18–61% in birch leaves within a radius of 6,5 km), and contributes to oxidative damage of antioxidant enzymes (catalase, peroxidase). Accumulation of an excessive amount of hydrogen peroxide or inactivation of the active center of the enzyme by technogenic pollutants leads to a decrease in the potential activity of redox enzymes. At the same time, there is an adaptive restructuring of the photosynthetic apparatus, manifested in the form of an increase in the level of carotenoids in the leaves of woody plants 1,3–2,1 times. A high degree of inhibition of enzymatic activity can be a diagnostic sign of weak resistance of woody plants to technogenic influences.
